THE Breakthrough

Documenting a Historic Alpine Breakthrough

On September 18, 2025, a historic milestone was achieved deep beneath the Alps: the cross-border breakthrough of the exploratory tunnel of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT). For the first time, a continuous underground connection between Austria and Italy became a reality.

As the future longest railway tunnel in the world (64 kilometers), the BBT is a century project that will sustainably shift freight traffic from road to rail.

The Execution: Documenting such a monumental event required precision and the ability to operate in extreme underground conditions. We captured the highly anticipated moment of the breakthrough, where years of engineering, heavy machinery, and international collaboration culminated in a single, historic event. Our approach focused on the raw power of the excavation and the profound emotions of the miners and engineers, creating a series of powerful, impactful images.
